KICKING off a new venture takes a lot of effort but sometimes a familiar face can help you get there quicker.

 

Veteran comedian Ugly Dave Gray is fronting a new Gold Coast business that is pushing an American invention into global markets.

While Hi Dow Australia boss Tom Ivascanin says the business has grown strongly through ‘word of mouth’, he concedes it helps to have a celebrity get the message across locally.

‘‘Ugly Dave has been very good for our brand,’’ said Mr Ivascanin. ‘‘We have managed to sell 3000 units since February, with about half of those through referrals.’’

Ugly Dave is probably better known to those over the age of 40 and that’s the target market for Hi Dow Australia.

The comedian came on board after trying the product on an achilles tendon problem.

‘‘It didn’t cure it but it made it a heck of a site easier to bear,’’ said Ugly Dave, who lives at Runaway Bay and these days earns a living on the cruise ship circuit.

Hi Dow Australia has secured the Australian, New Zealand and Philippines distribution rights for the electronic massagers which have achieved 10 million unit sales in the US alone over the past eight years.

The device is touted as ‘noninvasive, drug free’ massage unit that boosts blood circulation within the body.

Mr Ivascanin said he was hopeful of securing the European distribution rights to Hi Dow products by September.

In the meantime, he has been securing regional distributors across the country.
