Australian households switching to electronic security
Electronic surveillance cameras are increasingly becoming an integral part of the Australian household IT set up due to their greater affordability and versatility.
Surveillance camera systems have really kept pace with the latest advances in technology according to Craig Mitchell, Managing Director of OzSpy, who said that most people were unaware of how much electronic security products had evolved in recent times.
Mr Mitchell explained that modern surveillance camera systems now enable people to monitor what´s going on both inside and outside their home or business from their lounge room with live footage viewed on their TV or even from hundreds of kilometres away on their smart phone or notebook computer.
"Surveillance cameras until recently were commonly used only as a safety measure and a deterrent to crime, however now householders are finding they are useful in many other situations" Mr Mitchell said.
"Our stores around Australia sell a great deal of camera systems to families for many purposes including surprising needs like monitoring what their pets are getting up to when they are at work. For example, they use them to discover how their pets are escaping from their yard," he said.
However, security and safety is still the primary reason why householders are investing in this technology and the increase in Australia´s crime rate is of concern to many people.
In a recent nationwide survey conducted by OzSpy, 64% of respondents indicated they often do not feel safe in their own homes, with an overwhelming 93% of respondents stating that Australia is quickly becoming a less safe place to live in recent years.
Mr Mitchell said that generally people have an increased feeling of safety and enjoy greater peace of mind knowing that they have the full protection of an electronic security system.
"The modern camera systems are a more economical means of deterring crime and are viewed upon favourably by insurance companies" he said.
"Even the most advanced piece of surveillance equipment is now well within reach of the average householder, and easily able to be put together by the enthusiastic DIY man (or woman)."
"This includes camera and alarm systems that are comparable to many commercial ranges at just a portion of the price. Our complete CCTV camera systems now start from $549, not to mention alarm systems from under $100, which offer residences a great opportunity to get advanced protection for a low investment."
Mr Mitchell also said that there were a number of other simple yet effective methods that people can use to deter thieves from entering their home.
"Some great suggestions are to plant a prickly bush in front of windows; having two good quality locks on each door, one internal and one external; and fitting sliding patio doors with anti-lift devices along with removable track locks," he said.
"I would also suggest installing motion detecting lighting or low energy lighting fitted with photo-electric cells that automatically activate when the daylight level reaches a certain point. Keep shrubbery and trees around the home trimmed so that burglars can´t be concealed."
